J’aime Louise Bourgeois

Day trip to Avignon to see the Louise Bourgeois show at the Palais des Papes. Mind blowingly beautiful…everything from giant spider sculptures to watercolor works on paper. Super inspiring. I especially love her watercolors.

Dinner at Marie-Claude’s is always a super special treat. She has a mas (Provençal farmhouse that’s been in their family for centuries) in nearby Châteaurenard. She & her sister, Jacqueline, are retired frisee & melon farmers and wow, can they cook. Some of the most delicious meals we’ve enjoyed at their table, sitting en plein aire beneath the grape arbor and fig trees. Summer delight.

castellet monoprint 2Our dear sculptor/artist friend, Joseph Sloan, recently finished a small series of monoprints for an exhibit in the town of Castellet. He made them using layers of cardboard cutouts, each ink color representing a separate layer. Below is a glimpse of his workshop and the tools used: a super sharp exacto knife for slicing through cardboard to make the delicate layers; and a book press to make the print.

The watercolors dry instantly here. I’ve set up a little atelier outside our gite with a view of the steep hillside which is abundant with gnarled old olive trees, oaks and wild rosemary. The buzzing sound of the cigales in the nearby trees. The heat (& light!) is intense.IMG_9235IMG_8998
